There is currently a lot going on regarding liver allocation. The transplant community is at a crossroads with the OPTN/UNOS Liver and Intestinal Organ Allocation Committee’s recently released public comment proposal on enhancing liver allocation.
The new proposal aims to balance equity in access to liver transplants and recognize concerns that are raised regarding the impact of travel and logistics related to broader sharing. It moves away from the previously proposed eight districts model in favor of the concentric circle model that is expected to increase sharing within the region (and sometimes outside of the region, depending upon the geographic area covered by the circle) for candidates at a greater medical priority.
This is a challenging subject that requires a thoughtful discussion. Now through October 2, 2017, UNOS will be accepting public comments on this proposal. If you are interested in commenting and having your voice heard, click here.
