Reading can often change our lives or make us think differently. In Tom’s case, reading a blog post from political writer, Virginia Postrel, changed his life and saved another. After reading the blog, he discovered that Postrel planned to donate one of her kidneys to author, Sally Satel.
Although Tom did not know anyone who needed a kidney, he was inspired to become a living donor. He knew that there are hundreds of people in need of a kidney, and he had the power to help one of them. He sought out to become a living donor to someone he never met.
Despite his families misgivings, Tom never hesitated about completing the process of being a donor, and he never felt afraid of the surgery.
After the surgery, Tom was able to meet the recipient of his kidney, a 34-year-old man. The donation has given Tom a strong sense of satisfaction. Knowing that he was able to contribute to saving another person’s life and make a significant difference has meant a lot.
Today, Tom continues to advocate for organ donation. He volunteers at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he discusses the procedure to those interested in making a living kidney donation.
He was required to take several health-related tests to qualify to be a living donor. The experience has made Tom more aware of his own health and led him to a healthier life.
