2017 Transplant Patient Summit Background
Through the years, the AST has worked diligently to provide an educational and friendly forum for all transplant professionals to advance the field of transplantation and improve patient care. To maximize our organization’s reach and continue to pursue our society’s mission to promote research, education, advocacy, and organ donation, the patient perspective proved to be invaluable to our efforts.
As a new initiative in 2017, AST’s leadership worked directly with patients and live donors by hosting the Transplant Patient Summit, which took place at the Mayflower Hotel on October 23-24, 2017 in Washington, DC.
How was the Summit?
The first Transplant Patient Summit, to put it simply, far exceeded our expectations. We were able to bring together over 170 individuals including transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, caregivers, partner organization representatives, pharma reps and transplant professionals. Our hope was to bring together a transplant community with open and honest discussions about what the journey is like from each group's perspective to better help us understand what's important from their perspectives. By raising the voice of the transplant community, we came out of the meeting energized and as excited as ever to push forward in our advocacy and research efforts with the help of our community.
